Does Link Order Affect SEO

February 5th, 2010

There has been a lot of debate in the search engine optimization field lately regarding the order in which a navigational link appears on a webpage and how much weight it is given based on it’s order.

Since the dawn of SEO it has been believed that the earliest possible location to fit a link into a web page meant that link would become the most valuable on the page.

Matt Cutts from Google has recently posted a video clearly stating that Google does not award any extra value to links that appear higher up on the webpage. This announcement has sparked a lot of interesting conversations across the web. IMO if you concentrate on clean coding as well as proper website design and architecture your link value received should be automatically designated to the word or phrase you choose.

Here is Matt Cutts from Google with an SEO Video:

Google Increases PPC Click Through Rates

October 19th, 2009

A few months back Google released a statement that free organic listing received a slightly higher click through rate than PPC or paid ads.

Well, in Google’s 3rd quarter release conference call the tides seem to be turning. Google now reports that PPC ads now receive a significantly higher CTR than back in August. Here are a few of the reasons that Google claims are responsible for the increased CTR.

The biggest things, probably in order, or close to order, were the UI tweaks that we did for results pages. We changed the maximum width, decreasing the spacing between the search results and the right hand side ads on wide screen. With that it increased the click-through rate on the right hand side ads and I think we did that some time around the second week in August.

We also had some significant ad improvements like site links that basically allow additional links to categorize and deeper advertisers of a site, which you can see if you run a query on something like Chevy, you’ll see the Silverado, the Malibu, you will see more information there, which increased click-through rates.

We also did some more work on showing more goods at good ads and expanded match. But we don’t give a specific sense of exactly the percentage that that resulted in. The more significant of the changes occurred in mid-August.

Yahoo and Microsoft Strike a Deal

August 6th, 2009

Finally, Microsoft and Yahoo have merged forces to create a super search engine. By joining together they have shortened the list of major search engine competitors from three down to two.

Several months back Microsoft attempted an unsuccessful takeover of Yahoo to the tune of $47 billion dollars. Now that the deal has finally gone through Microsoft has gained exactly what it hoped for the most and that is the massive search traffic from Yahoo. Including the hordes of search traffic gained from Yahoo this new “super search engine” is still no match for Google. Any search engine marketing campaign should still place the most attention on Google for optimal results.

Stay tuned in to The Search Marketing News Blog for updates on how this new merger will effect your search engine rankings.
